gal-dem

gal-dem is an online and print magazine committed to sharing perspectives from women and non-binary people of colour.

The idea for this article came to me after a friend shared his story of when he was made to feel uncomfortable about sitting with friends (a group of black and brown people) during lunch at work. He and his friends were accused of purposefully excluding their white colleagues on numerous occasions.

The irony ran deep, as they often felt excluded from the wider company and were at times made to feel like tokens. I then experienced a similar situation (again in the workplace and again during lunch). This made me start to question who else was this happening to and why was it being highlighted as an issue?
